Sylvia GM / Campaign system

Sylvia: beyond the public alpha

This is the direction we intend to take Sylvia after the public alpha. Most features still need detailed design, and there are no announced release dates or fixed delivery order. Planned features, research and longer-term possibilities are separated below.

Planned features

More rules and worlds

  • Full SRD spell support: continue from SRD Lite’s selected 96-spell launch roster toward the full 339-spell SRD suite, building on the work already done
  • Trigger Discipline and Siren Protocol: later support for tactical play and its accompanying setting, including character creation and advancement, equipment, specialties and in-world computer networks. This work is currently paused
  • Riichi Mahjong: a playable ruleset, a readable visual table alongside the roleplaying, and an accompanying setting and adventures. The rules profile, setting and first stories still need to be chosen

Campaigns that can grow

  • Update an existing campaign’s rules: review and adopt compatible changes while preserving progress and the player’s screen layout, with clear handling of conflicts
  • Add chapters and sequels: append new authored acts or a subsequent adventure to the same campaign, retaining its characters, world and history
  • DM Assistant Mode: let a human game master lead while Sylvia helps with descriptions, NPC dialogue, rules lookups and encounter calculations
  • Multiplayer sessions: let several players share a campaign, with a host in control and Sylvia waiting for the people actually being addressed
  • Campaign sharing: build on existing portable export/import to support the intended share-and-play journey. We first need to establish which parts are already covered and what additional sharing or reuse options are needed

More ways to play

  • Phone-friendly play: a touch-friendly interface designed for small screens. The first devices, delivery format and connection model are still open
  • Native Linux and macOS versions: normal installation, play, Builder and saved-work support on clearly defined platforms
  • Accessible dictation: speak an action, review and correct the text, then send it. Keyboard and assistive-input controls are part of the plan
  • Spoken narration: listen to Sylvia’s narration while keeping the readable text, with playback and replay controls
  • In-app updates: discover and install new desktop releases at a suitable time while preserving campaigns, content and settings

Images and richer game panels

  • Image generation and editing: create and revise visual references, character portraits, scene illustrations and location-sensitive backgrounds. Planned integrations include GPT Image and ComfyUI, with assets prepared during building or created on demand and reused in play
  • Reusable visual game panels: let ruleset authors describe game-specific displays and interactions through shared capabilities. Riichi’s table is one intended use, with further displays able to reuse the same system

Planned quality work

  • More natural narration: targeted improvements for recurring model-specific writing habits while preserving clues, uncertainty and player choice
  • SylviaBench: repeatable comparisons of how reliably models operate Sylvia, starting with SRD combat, saved-state updates, retrieval and progression across different player styles
  • Broader SRD integration checks: start with equipment and its real effects in play, then address demonstrated gaps in supported rules
  • Reliability and maintenance: make session, provider and ruleset responsibilities easier to maintain, preserve existing save/recovery behaviour, and investigate conflicts between narrative memory and committed game facts
  • Performance and cost research: measure how repeated-input caching behaves in real GM and Builder journeys before choosing optimizations or claiming savings

Exploring for the longer term

  • Further rulesets: revisit Cairn and discuss other openly licensed adaptations and original systems. These remain candidates for discussion
  • Live generated worlds: explore a future visual world that stays consistent with campaign state as characters move, act and revisit places, when the technology is suitable
  • Runtime and tooling changes: evaluate a move away from Python and other current tools where the benefits justify it. The replacement stack and extent of migration are undecided

Also in development: optional hosted inference

Sylvia Portal is a separate project for an optional managed model subscription, intended to let players sign in inside Sylvia without setting up their own provider account or API key. Existing provider and bring-your-own-key options remain. It is not available yet, and no launch date is announced. Possible API access for other applications remains a post-launch research question.
